Veterans Affairs reports claims activity, outreach events and seeks transit coordination

Ruth from the Veterans Affairs office presented the department's activity report for March and related outreach work. She said staff reviewed 41 claims, recorded 15 decisions and one partial decision, submitted three claim updates to the VA, filed nine new claims and six appeals, and completed four intensive files and six VA healthcare applications. Ruth reported 271 total interactions across phone, email and in-person visits.
She also reported that in February 427 veterans or eligible dependents received $876,474 in benefits, and that the office handled 80 open claims of which 61 were filed by the office. Ruth described recent training (IDVA spring school) and local outreach events (a luncheon in Bellevue, a Blue Move & Thrive Senior Wellness Expo on April 22, and a veterans appreciation night May 28). Board members and staff discussed expanding a rides/van program for veterans; Ruth agreed to follow up with regional transit providers and check on a potential enterprise rental arrangement and WRTA coordination.
