Federal CHBP award could cover up to $528,000 for Jackson County’s 578th Avenue bridge

Jaden Sheckwell of Jackson County Engineering told the Board that the Iowa submittal to the Federal Highway Administration’s Competitive Highway Bridge Program (CHBP) was awarded and that Jackson County’s bridge on 578th Avenue is included. Sheckwell said the federal grant portion for the county’s bridge is "up to, like, $528,000" and that typical grant structure is an 80% federal portion with a 20% local match. He said the county’s bridge is already in the five-year replacement program and that the federal funding would allow the county to pursue a concrete slab bridge rather than a smaller day-labor repair.
Sheckwell said the state’s application bundled multiple projects (Jackson County’s bridge will be grouped with Dubuque County and the city of Dyersville) and that the three projects will be let together so bidders bid the package. He noted the county cannot yet formally accept or obligate the grant until administrative steps are completed but described the award as "good news" that reduces the county’s local spending on the replacement.
