Jackson County fair manager outlines repairs, insurance and limited remaining funds

Terry Selzer, Jackson County Fair manager, updated the Jackson County Board of Supervisors on April 14 about multiple maintenance problems at the fairgrounds and how county funding has been allocated. Selzer described recent water leaks—saying that when crews dug down they found "when they put the tile in, they didn't glue it together"—and reported bathroom leaks, a failing drain north of Volunteer Hall and repeated damage to roof vent caps when snow and ice slide off the new roof. He told the board he will contact contractor Beckwith (and Dave Nugent) to clarify whether snow-and-ice diverters were included in the previous roof work.
Selzer provided a breakdown of how the county’s $90,000 allocation for the fair has been used so far: about $47,000 toward property and liability insurance, $25,000 earmarked for fair premiums and ribbons, leaving roughly $15,000 for grounds maintenance and other repairs. He said the insurance market in the area rates the county high for hail, wind and tornado risk and that the county may need to remain with the existing insurer. Selzer also noted local volunteers and staff (Al and Donnie) have performed much of the troubleshooting and repairs. The manager asked the board to allow follow-up with the contractor and to report back with any contract clarifications or cost estimates for the diverters and other fixes.
