Board approves Shanti Spa façade changes at 500 East Main, urges lighter trim palette

Jordan Andrews explained asbestos removal requires careful, non-friable handling and can be slow and expensive; the applicant indicated readiness to proceed with appropriate permitting. Andrews stated, “It’ll be completely removed and replaced with hardy plank.”
Board members discussed retention of historic architectural details. Several members emphasized preserving original porch cornice and dentils if those features are uncovered during siding removal. One member raised concerns about the applicant’s proposed dark navy trim, calling it “not in keeping with anything historically” and recommending the applicants consider palettes that accentuate trim rather than obscure it.
Chair Jim Glockner moved to approve BAR 2405 subject to conditions that historic elements, if found, remain, and with a recommendation that the applicant consider a lighter trim color than the proposed dark navy. The motion was seconded and approved by the members present. Staff said the approval letter will reiterate the conditions and that staff will work with the applicant on trim samples and photos prior to finalization.
The board’s action approves the siding replacement with conditions to preserve historic features when found and leaves color choice as a recommendation rather than a binding requirement.
