Board adopts updated accessory-dwelling-unit rules for unincorporated Alameda County

The Alameda County Planning Committee completed second reading and adopted an ordinance amending sections of the county zoning code to adopt an accessory dwelling unit (ADU) and junior ADU program for unincorporated areas.
Rodrigo Orduna of the Alameda County Planning Department summarized the changes and cited the specific code sections including additions to chapter 17.55 and amendments to multiple section numbers. Supervisor Tam moved to waive the full second reading and adopt the ordinance as presented; after no public comment the motion passed unanimously.
The ordinance updates local ADU rules to align with the board's recent policy direction and completes the implementation step that began with the board's first reading on Aug. 8, 2024. Staff will publish the ordinance text and update zoning code resources for permit applicants.
