Todd Glover, executive director of the Municipal Association, presented Goose Creek with a communications award Thursday, citing the city's Adopt-a-Goose public-art program as a successful effort to build local identity and increase resident engagement.
"It shows a dedication to the city's standpoint to its residents that they are really striving to make citizens aware of what's going on with their local government," Glover said during the presentation. The program asks businesses to sponsor a four-foot fiberglass goose, covering design, painting and installation at a $2,000 price point, according to the presentation.
A video shown to the council described program results: the city now has 39 goose installations (35 purchased by business partners), 25 completed in the program's first year, and social-media reach cited at roughly 30,000 video views and about 40,000 photo impressions. The presentation said next steps include a GIS map of goose locations and trading cards to promote visits to local businesses.
Mayor Gregory S. Aviv praised staff and volunteers for the project, saying, "I'm really proud of the work that all of our staff... They put a lot of work, effort, energy and sweat into it." He and council members said the program promotes economic development and resident relations by encouraging people to visit local businesses and share photos online.
The council accepted the award and the presenters encouraged residents and businesses to continue supporting the initiative through sponsorships and participation.
