Committee to oppose proposed Labor-HHS cuts that county staff say would hurt social services

Supervisor Chan asked committee staff for their assessment of a draft Labor-Health and Human Services appropriations bill that committee materials said could cut social-service funding.
John, the legislative staff member who delivered the federal update, told the committee the House has not adopted a final Labor-HHS bill and that final FY25 funding will require bipartisan, bicameral agreement and White House sign-off. "I think it's effective, to let our senators, and of course our House members know that we are advocating to increase that funding or at least have it level funded, based on FY24 levels," John said. He added that the Senate numbers appear closer to the County’s priorities.
Committee members and staff agreed it was appropriate to weigh in with the County’s congressional delegation to press for preservation of social-service funding. The committee recorded its intent to oppose the proposed House draft cuts and to forward that position for Board consideration.
