Abilene Zoo reports newborn giraffes and large turnout for military appreciation event

The Abilene Zoo reported spring births including a newborn giraffe and said a recent military appreciation event drew more than 2,600 guests, about 1,500 of whom were active or retired military.
Jesse Potabom, zoo director (speaker 10), told the board the zoo's spring season produced newborns, including a calf from mother Pele who arrived small and required keeper assistance to stand but is now thriving. "Pele came to us from Fort Worth Zoo. She is a first-time mom... He did come out a little bit small, so we had to assist him on standing up," Potabom said.
Potabom also reported last Saturday's military appreciation event, sponsored by H-E-B, drew over 2,600 guests, roughly 1,500 of whom were active or retired military. He invited zoo members to after-hours events and keeper chats planned later in May.
