Residents press for progress on Brightwood, Eckington/Edgewood and Kennedy Street library projects

Zach Israel highlighted repeated appropriations for a Brightwood Park site — “the council appropriated $5,000,000 for site acquisition in FY24” and additional funds in later cycles — and said DCPL had not used the money, asking whether executive opposition effectively stalls projects.
Joe Bishop Henchman and Antikos Kenrota, ANC leaders from wards where new libraries are proposed, pressed for status updates and urged coordination with Demped and developers for site inclusion. Director Reyes Gavilan said DCPL supports community commons or smaller community‑focused models but cautioned that projects require fully dedicated funding; for one preferred Eckington/Edgewood site he estimated a funding gap of roughly $20 million beyond amounts currently in the plan.
