County staff urge MDOT push on MD 231 safety projects amid statewide shortfall

County planning staff briefed the board on the Maryland Department of Transportation’s draft Consolidated Transportation Program and asked commissioners to use the Sept. 24 MDOT tour to press for safety projects affecting Calvert County.
Jessica Gano (planning) told commissioners two recent series of crashes near the proposed MD 231/508 intersection heighten safety concerns and that MDOT’s safety criteria and constrained revenue could determine which projects proceed. Staff said the draft CTP prioritizes safety but also hedges projects with an asterisk indicating possible deferral until the final allocation.
Commissioners and staff discussed local project status; staff quoted budget‑page figures for three projects: $12 million for Toy Lane and Mason Road, $14 million for geometric improvements at 508, and $5 million for Skipjack Road. The Public Works director said District 5 had not yet received final direction from Baltimore and that an answer about funding could come after the secretary’s tour. One commissioner noted a reported statewide transportation funding shortfall of about $1 billion.
Staff will provide crash-data updates before the Sept. 24 meeting and encouraged commissioners to press the MDOT secretary to keep safety projects funded. No formal board action was required at this work session.
