Grand Prairie’s Hoops for History returns Feb. 26 to celebrate local Black history

Monte Whetstone, Parks Division Manager of Recreation for the City of Grand Prairie, said the annual Hoops for History event celebrates Black history in the city’s local Dalworth Park community and uses a friendly basketball game to bridge police-community relations. “This event is an event that celebrates and culminates not just black history, but black history in our local community,” Whetstone said.
Whetstone described Hoops for History as a free, family-friendly evening that pairs a local community team against the Grand Prairie Police Department and includes vendors, school performances and free food. He said the event also honors longtime local leaders — naming Saloma Gates, Patsy Ray, Preston Dixon, Reverend Earl Horton and Trina James as examples — and takes place at the Dalworth Recreation Center, 2012 Spike Street. The event is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 26; doors open at 5:30 p.m.
Whetstone said the program gives the public a chance to see the police “in a different light” and provides a time to recognize community members for service. He encouraged attendees to check the City of Grand Prairie website for full program details and related Black History Month activities.
