During its May 6 meeting, the Employee Benefits Committee reviewed waiting-period alternatives for the county short-term disability plan, focusing on a 7-day accident / 7-day illness-or-maternity waiting period and a 14-day alternative. Both options were presented with the same weekly benefit minimum of $25. The committee ultimately adopted the 7/7 option as part of its motion on plan design.
Committee members and insurer representatives clarified how the benefit interacts with other pay sources: STD benefits are recorded as 100 percent tax-free while long-term disability (LTD) benefits are taxable. The minutes also record that STD offsets with sick pay—an employee who receives 100 percent sick pay would not receive STD—and that STD can roll into LTD on the 91st day without re-filing.
