Republic Services presented contract-renewal details for Huber Heights, including curb delivery of new waste and recycling carts, a change to weekly recycling, and operational adjustments for summer heat.
Annie, the company’s municipal sales representative, told council that residents who do not currently have carts will receive them the week of June 22 and may begin using the waste carts the week of June 29. “Residents may begin using those waste carts the week of June 29,” Annie said during the presentation. She also said weekly recycling service will begin the week of July 6.
The company provided collection data for 2025: roughly 13,000 households participated in waste collection and about 11,000 participated in recycling, which amounts to an approximately 86% recycling participation rate. Annie said that in 2025 Republic collected more than 16,000 tons of residential waste and about 2,100 tons of residential recycling material from the city.
Council members raised questions about contamination and opt-outs. Annie said contaminated recycling will be treated as such, drivers’ truck cameras can identify contamination and Republic will notify homeowners; the company will remove an unwanted recycling cart on request. On senior discounts and eligibility, staff and Republic agreed to post a local signup survey and manage signups locally rather than relying on an external call center; council confirmed the senior-discount eligibility age at 55.
Annie also said Republic will start collection an hour earlier (5 a.m.) during forecasted periods of excessive heat to reduce employees’ exposure and protect drivers’ health. Council did not take a formal vote during the work session; the item will be on the Monday agenda for final action.
