Register of Deeds Lindsey Formanek told the board that real estate transfer-fee rules changed in 1981 to require counties remit 80% of fees to the state, leaving counties 20%. Using Vernon County collections from the past four years, Formanek said the county collected $1,887,077 total and retained $370,974; a return to a 50/50 split, she said, would have provided an additional $572,565 to county government over that period.
On a motion by Supv Eggen, seconded by Supv Taylor, the Board adopted Resolution 2023-33 asking the State Legislature to revise the transfer-fee share formula to restore a 50/50 split. The resolution directs copies be sent to Governor Tony Evers, the county's state legislators, and the Wisconsin Counties Association.
