Public works staff outlined the Alamo Road, Bradford and Kansas City Southern Railroad rebuild project and answered council questions about design and construction impacts.
The presentation described widening the cross section by 4 feet to match adjacent sections, drainage improvements throughout the corridor, sidewalk connections where gaps exist, a dedicated left‑turn lane on Canyon Creek driven by documented crash history, and possible median and trail connections near the railroad crossing. Staff noted existing culverts would be improved or connected and that some private easement and erosion issues may need resolution.
Staff said the project's opinion of probable construction cost was $3.81 million (including a 15% contingency to account for inflation and materials) and that Denton County may contribute up to 50% through bond funds in spring 2026. Council discussed traffic phasing to maintain emergency access and suggested temporary options — including expanded use of existing crossings — during construction. Staff estimated the Highland Shores work would take roughly two years while this project might run 9–11 months depending on weather and contractor performance.
