County staff warn footage must be secured and server capacity may need upgrades

Technical staff told the commission that if footage is to be useful for criminal investigations it must be controlled and secured on a locked server with restricted access, otherwise recordings can be overwritten and lose evidentiary value. "Because that's one thing to consider is that if we're using it for any criminal activity... it's gotta be controlled, basically. Otherwise, it won't have any evidentiary value at all," said Speaker 6.
Participants reported that adding cameras reduced available server capacity and that current retention is roughly 60 days for new footage. Staff noted that a transition to RTC could provide greater capacity but that hard (continuous) camera deployments would likely require a server upgrade and additional service space.
