Commissioners warn against cameras in areas with expectation of privacy

The county attorney cautioned that any camera installations must avoid areas where people have an expectation of privacy, such as bathrooms or changing areas. "Just have to make sure that there are no cameras installed in any area where there is an expectation of bridal [privacy]," Jared said, adding that common entrances and public spaces require careful consideration of purpose and placement.
Commissioner Marsha and others noted that retention windows and access rules should be part of policy decisions so the county can balance deterrence and privacy. Marsha observed that shorter retention reduces exposure to open-records requests: "The longer you keep it, the longer open records requests can be made on it." The commission agreed those topics should be included in the draft policy.
