Vernon County approves forest work plan and grant applications for trails and conservation
Summary
The Board adopted the Vernon County Forest Annual Work Plan for 2024 and approved authorizations to apply for stewardship, trails aid and conservation grants to support timber management, snowmobile trails and habitat projects.
County Forester Nick Gillman presented the 2024 Vernon County Forest Annual Work Plan and explained grant-related requirements tied to DNR funding. Gillman detailed planned timber cuttings, timber stand improvements and the County’s partnership with the Wisconsin DNR that helps fund part of the forester's salary and requires a formal work plan.
The Board adopted Resolution 2023-62 (forest work plan), Resolution 2023-61 (authorize Stewardship Grant application) and Resolution 2023-63 (designate County Trails Aid grant administration) on voice votes. Gillman also explained Resolution 2023-64 to participate in Conservation Aids projects for fish and wildlife habitat and to authorize spending and matching funds where required; the Board approved that resolution as well.
