Residents voice both support and opposition to landfill expansion at Vernon County Board hearing

Dozens of residents told the Vernon County Board on Oct. 19 that they either support or oppose the proposed landfill expansion; speakers cited local jobs and services in favor and environmental and process concerns in opposition.
During the public comment portion of the Oct. 19 meeting, more than a dozen residents addressed the Board about Resolution 2023-67, which authorizes pursuit of a Plan of Operations for an expanded county landfill.
Speakers from the Towns of Viroqua, Webster, Hamburg and others presented mixed views. Supporters — including Gail Frie, Nate Klinge and Greg Lawton — spoke in favor of the resolution, while opponents — including Kelvin Rodolfo, Tom Lukkens, Anna Jo Doerr and Kathleen Crittenden — asked the Board to halt expansion. Supv Olson read a letter from the Town of Viroqua summarizing concerns and opposition to expansion.
The public comment record shows both concerns over potential groundwater or PFAS impacts and requests for better engagement with host communities; town officials and residents asked for additional meetings with the County and confirmation that host agreements and negotiations will address community concerns. The Board proceeded to debate the resolution and later approved it on a roll-call vote.
