Board will not require full Citizens Police Academy; staff to offer abbreviated training

Several members said mandatory attendance could create an appearance of undue influence or bias. Howard Adams said he did not want a requirement that could later be cited as an influence on the board: “I don't wanna attend it because I don't want someone to come up later on and say there was undue influence.” Several other members echoed concerns that an eight-week academy might be excessive for volunteers.
Deputy Chief Tony Ashley described the academy’s format as roughly seven or eight weekly evening sessions that cover police policies, operations and specialized units. Staff said there is no requirement set for other city boards to undertake an eight-week program and proposed offering an abridged course or reading materials instead. Aaron Sorrell said he would review the legislative language and, absent a strict requirement, make attendance voluntary while encouraging members to engage with training resources.
By the end of the discussion, staff agreed to provide alternatives to the full academy and clarified that training materials would be made available in advance of hearings and as part of the board’s orientation.
