Sheriff: jail ready for DOCR inspection; St. John police contract ready for chair's signature

Sheriff Nate Gustafson reported to the Rolette County Board of County Commissioners that the yearly DOCR inspection is scheduled within two days and that “Jail is ready for it.” He delivered the operational update during the Aug. 19 meeting, and the board recorded multiple routine maintenance items alongside contract matters.
Gustafson told the commission the St. John City Police contract ended in April and is “ready to be signed by chair,” while Dunseith City has indicated it will not pursue a police contract at this time. He also explained a recent high water bill was caused by a plugged water softener and said the office will perform weekly checks going forward. Those operational items were raised as part of the sheriff’s regular report; no vote or amendment was recorded on the police contract during the meeting.
The sheriff presented several matters that overlap with budgeting and operations, including the camera-security contract renewal approved later in the meeting. Commissioners did not request a separate public hearing on the police contracts during the session.
