Vernon County adopted Resolution 2023-46 to rename and reclassify a set of highway department job titles (for example, changing "Highway Operator" to "Section Lead" and creating "Heavy Equipment Operator/Paint Crew") with the stated goal of eliminating seasonal "bump up" pay arrangements. Highway Commissioner Phil Hewitt told the board the reclassification is intended to streamline positions and end the need for ad-hoc supplemental pay for seasonal duties.
The resolution takes effect Nov. 1, 2023; the 2024 financial impact was reported in the resolution as $53,112.52 gross, with a net 2024 impact to the county of $29,211.89 after estimated 45% state reimbursement. The board adopted the measure by voice vote and directed Human Resources to update job descriptions accordingly.
