The Vernon County Board approved Resolution 2023-48 to conduct a compensation update with McGrath Human Resources Group, at an estimated cost of $10,200, to refresh the county’s wage data after the COVID-era labor market shifts. Supervisor Alycann Taylor said the intent is "not to do a complete wage study, but rather to refresh the data we already have," and the Finance Committee identified excess 2022 General Fund budget to cover the cost.
Supporters said accurate third-party data will help retain staff and inform any larger pay-structure changes the board considers; the measure was moved by Supv Taylor, seconded by Supv Eggen, and adopted by voice vote. The resolution notes the study will use approximately 20–25 comparable entities and that the La Crosse market will be included because the county is losing employees to that region.
