Sheriff Christopher Whiteford presented several public safety funding and contracting requests at the March 12 Committee of the Whole meeting.
Commissioners gave consensus approval for the sheriff to apply for an OHSP grant to cover Urban SDK first-year implementation costs and for the NCHIP grant to fund Livescan fingerprinting and laptops. The board also authorized Chair Kohn Fisher to execute 2025 law enforcement contracts with Coldsprings, Springfield, Excelsior, Kalkaska, Rapid River, Blue Lake, Boardman and Bear Lake townships; Sheriff Whiteford noted Clearwater was still pending. Discussion of remaining Dispatch IT quotes from Empiric was tabled for further review.
Why it matters: Grant funding and interlocal contracts affect county law enforcement capacity and equipment procurement. The NCHIP and OHSP applications could change operational capabilities for fingerprinting and digital dispatch tools.
What’s next: Staff will return with firm IT quotes and any outstanding contract language for Clearwater when available.
