Board agrees to habitat conservation plan to protect bats during forestry operations

The Vernon County Board on March 28 approved Resolution 2023-25 to enter a Landowner Agreement and Certificate of Inclusion into the Lakes States Forest Management Bat Habitat Conservation Plan. County Forester Nick Gilman explained the action is intended to allow county forest management while receiving incidental-take protections from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for bat species expected to be federally listed.
Gilman said the county has one recognized endangered-species hibernaculum on county-owned land and that following the plan's requirements would provide protections if incidental take occurs during logging activities. The resolution passed on a unanimous voice vote.
