Box Elder County's fire marshal told the commission he wants permission to partner with GovFunds to pursue grant funding for specialized equipment to clean SCBA gear and firefighter turnouts.
Kevin Lloyd, Box Elder Fire Marshal, said the NFPA‑approved washing machine and extractor (about $40,000) would allow departments across the county to decontaminate air packs, helmets and boots, reducing carcinogen exposure for firefighters. Lloyd said the unit could be mobile and used by multiple departments, including HAZMAT response, and asked the commission for authorization to work with GovFunds on grant-writing. Commissioners voted to allow staff to pursue the funding application.
"With all the carcinogens these days that firefighters deal with, we really need to wash turnouts properly," Lloyd said. "GovFund's been working with [us] and they are very positive that we're gonna be able to get this all through the grant."
