Police describe summer outreach trips for neighborhood youth

Chief Dermen told the Fire and Police Commission that summer is the department's busiest outreach season and credited the crime prevention unit, civilian staff and volunteers for running the program. "On July 8 as part of this outreach program, 64 kids were chaperoned to Harper College and, after that, the Park District pool," he said, adding that on July 14 another 47 children attended Camp Duncan.
Dermen said the program aims to support youth "that is not able to go to these field trips," allowing officers to interact in a civilian capacity. He outlined two remaining trips to close the program: a visit to Santa's Village on July 31 and a Chicago Fire night game on August 1.
