Councilors reflected on public safety and event management following the recent 4th of July festival. Multiple councilors praised the collaboration among departments and staff, including public works and parks personnel, for their response to severe weather and for evacuations during the event. Councilor Philip Scheeringa described the response as "fabulous" and said "we weathered the storm and we did the best we could," noting the difficulty of controlling weather.
Councilors also addressed a fireworks mishap that occurred during the festivities. Council President Georgeff said he was glad there were no injuries and suggested the council "revisit the fireworks issue and maybe go back to the drones." Councilor Scheeringa defended the Parks Department’s authority over the fireworks contract, stating the decision should rest with that department. The council recognized new Park Superintendent Mindi Ray for her efforts coordinating response activities during the weekend.
