Noelle Martin, the county HR generalist, informed commissioners that employees enrolled in the defined-benefit MERS plan sometimes ask to purchase service credit and that an employee in the sheriff's office, Josh Burmester, has requested to buy five years of credit. Martin said the MERS estimate for the five-year purchase is $101,566 and asked the board to approve a motion at the next meeting to allow the employee to proceed with payment arrangements.
Commissioners asked whether the employee intends to remain employed and Martin said the employee is not leaving the county. The board acknowledged the standard practice of allowing employees to purchase credit when the funds come from employees' existing retirement accounts and directed staff to place a motion on the next agenda so the purchase can move forward if the board approves.
