Higgins Lake Foundation launches free Be WellWise well-testing program for local wells

At the Roscommon County meeting on May 27, the Higgins Lake Foundation introduced Be WellWise, a free well water-testing program aimed at better understanding groundwater quality in the Higgins Lake watershed.
Nancy Lamb, chair of the foundation, and John Bridal outlined the program timeline (June 10–Sept 30), eligibility (residents of Beavercreek, Gerrish and Lyon townships who draw drinking water from a well on the tested property), and testing protocol. Raven Analytical in Roscommon will perform analyses for E. coli, total coliform, nitrate and nitrite; kits cost about $45 each and participants must deliver samples to the lab within about 30 hours of collection. Property owners will receive their results directly; the foundation said aggregated, de-identified data may be shared with public-health organizations if property owners opt in. The foundation plans targeted distribution and consent forms to ensure kits are limited to watershed participants and to maximize returned tests.
