Officials flag tourism slump, historic-preservation and downtown concerns during Comp Plan kickoff
Summary
Commissioners and council members told consultants that the town's vision remains valid but execution lags: they raised tourism decline, downtown odor tied to a poultry plant, parking shortages, and transportation chokepoints at Route 11/211 as priorities for the update.

During the joint kickoff, elected officials and planning commissioners discussed whether the current vision's goals still fit New Market and repeatedly described implementation as the main shortcoming. Participants said the town continues to value historic-district preservation, tourism and a high quality of life, but noted tourism has weakened with declines in Civil War–era interest and golf-related visitors, and that the downtown lacks a welcoming environment in part because of an odor linked to a nearby poultry plant.
Commission members also identified parking constraints and traffic flow problems at the Route 11/Route 211 intersection as recurring barriers to hosting events and encouraging travelers to stop. The group noted the completion of the Village at Smith Creek as a positive growth example that the plan update should build on.
