Vernon County reports $238,000 communications grant, FEMA payment steps and new municipal economic grants

At the Feb. 16 meeting the Board received several economic-development and grant updates. Staff reported the county received a $238,000 grant to pay for software and hardware upgrades to support emergency communications, a collaborative effort involving the Sheriff’s Department, Grants Office, Land Information and IT Department. A $311,000 FEMA grant to cover half of Vernon Manor’s 2022 expenses is in final approval stages.
Supervisor Stanek described a new Vernon County Economic Development grant program restricted to municipalities: "The maximum grant request is $10,000 and it is a 1:1 match. Expenses must occur on or before June 15th, 2024." The Economic Development Committee is revising loan-program guidelines and is considering asking the Mississippi River Regional Planning Commission to coordinate an Economic Development Loan Program.
Staff also reported the county plans to use some Ho-Chunk funds for a Community Development Grant (applications due April 21) and will apply for a Department of Defense storage grant for Emergency Management. The Mississippi River Regional Planning Commission has been asked to update the county's Comprehensive Plan; any funding request related to that work will be brought to the Board.
