The Vernon County Board adopted Resolution 2023-07 on Feb. 16, 2023 to set a $40-per-hour fee for the County Surveyor to provide advisory services to municipalities, beginning March 1, 2023. The resolution states the fee is intended to offset taxpayer expense for services that are not incidental to the normal job duties of the county surveyor and that the Land Information Council will set and review the fee as needed.
County Surveyor Laurence Johns explained these services are advisory and do not include performing actual surveys for municipalities. Johns said a "phone call for a question does not generate a fee," and that the fee is meant to cover time spent in meetings helping to create or revise zoning ordinances. Corp Counsel stated the fee does not create additional liability. The resolution was moved by Supervisor Semke and seconded by Supervisor Pedretti and carried on a voice vote.
The resolution text recorded in the minutes notes the Land Information Council recommended the fee by unanimous vote; it directs the Surveyor to impose the fee for municipality requests and to review the rate as needed.
