Council authorizes $1.48 million emergency levee repairs for Diking District 7

The Stanwood City Council on July 9 unanimously authorized the mayor to sign a $1,475,003.50 contract with Taylor's Excavators to perform emergency repairs on a damaged section of Diking District 7 levee.
A staff presenter (speaker 9) described a roughly 5,000-foot stretch damaged and overtopped by storms, said federal permitting challenges required splitting the project into phases, and recommended fixing the worst section now to protect the city through the next winter. “We have 1,750,000 from Sonwich County. We will use about 1.5 of that and change for this,” the presenter said, describing a plan to allocate roughly $1.5 million to the levee work and about $250,000 for remediation at Johnson Farm.
Councilors asked questions about the exact location (about 0.5 mile south of Big Ditch, behind a local farm) and the construction schedule; staff said heavy work would begin immediately and expected completion by the end of September. The motion to authorize the mayor to sign the contract was moved and seconded and passed by voice vote without opposition.
