County manager says backlog audits being addressed; budget changes made to reduce shortfall

County Manager Thomas Weaver told the Commission that work is underway to resolve audit noncompliance and to clear a backlog of past audits. "We actually have a kickoff meeting on Thursday or Friday of this week trying to get everything rolling. I'm 100% confident by the end of the year that we'll be compliant," Weaver said during the May 5 meeting.
Weaver also reviewed budget adjustments during the May 5 budget work session. Initial figures showed an approximate $370,000 shortfall. To reduce that gap staff identified revenue previously omitted (hotel–motel receipts) and made line-item changes: Superior Court salaries were reduced by about $14,000; the sheriff's salary line was reduced by about $40,000 tied to a deputy request; sheriff phone service was increased by roughly $3,500 to cover radios; and a recurring Axon body-camera subscription (about $20,000/year) was moved from SPLOST funding into the sheriff's general operating budget. Several capital requests were shifted into SPLOST budgets.
Weaver and commissioners noted the county remains behind on audit filings that other jurisdictions also face, but he emphasized a plan to clear the backlog before year-end and to continue budget refinement before adoption.
