Commission demands return of county truck and seeks formal vehicle policy after dispute with sheriff

County Manager Thomas Weaver reported at the Jan. 26 work session that a county-owned pickup that had been outfitted after purchase was taken to the sheriff's residence without county inspection, tags or insurance. Commissioners said the incident shows the need for a formal policy governing county-vehicle acquisition, inspection, assignment and custody. Commissioner Jason Frost said the county must retain control of county property and avoid uninsured vehicles being operated before title, plates and insurance are applied.
Following a closed executive session, Chairman Charles Coffey said the commission had asked the Sheriff to return the truck (or the promised trade vehicle) to the County Manager's office by noon Friday. Coffey stated: "The Sheriff bring the truck back to the County Manager's office by noon on Friday, or the one that was promised to trade." The board did not record a formal punitive action in the minutes; commissioners said they will prepare a written vehicle policy for future purchases and assignments.
