Selectmen approve surplus of 2012 International Workstar amid board concerns about fleet costs

The Board of Selectmen voted to surplus a 2012 International Workstar (fleet asset H35, VIN 1HTWDAZR8CH121003) and sell it via GovDeals. "This is a surplus vehicle. If we don't surplus it, it'll be parked on the side of the garage and not used," said Gary Schneider, director of public works, explaining corrosion from salt and that the unit has been replaced in the active fleet.
Committee member Greg objected to surplusing a vehicle with roughly 58,000 miles, saying he "hesitate[s] to endorse stripping a vehicle of 58,000 miles on it" without evidence it is not in working order and expressing broader concern about rising vehicle costs, software subscriptions and higher maintenance burdens for newer equipment. The chair responded that acquisitions had followed the approved fleet plan and that a fleet ad hoc committee will continue to review long‑range needs and recommendations for capital and fleet planning.
The board discussed fleet committee membership and criteria for meetings; the chair said the fleet ad hoc includes the first selectman, finance director, finance chair and RTM moderator and will provide recommendations for capital/fleet plans. After debate the motion to surplus the vehicle carried by voice vote.
