Commission tables public-safety radio upgrade over cost; asks staff for revised quotes

The Chattahoochee County Board of Commissioners heard a demonstration on Jan. 6 from Mr. Sullivan of Southern Link showing two potential public-safety radio models; the Sheriff and Chief Deputy Williamson were present for the demonstration. Commissioners expressed support for better communications but raised concerns about how to fund replacements for radios and repeaters, and about extending benefits to the fire department. Commissioner Jason Frost moved to table the purchase pending a revised quote and a review at the next work session; the motion passed unanimously.

County Manager Thomas Weaver told commissioners that the Sheriff "wants the high dollar radio at the $70,000.00" and that staff will seek additional quotes, including from Motorola, and pursue public-safety grants and potential repeater-sharing with neighboring jurisdictions. Commissioners also noted a printed report about surrounding counties’ equipment that the manager said was inaccurate; staff will verify which nearby counties use the high-end radios before making procurement recommendations. The board did not take a purchasing vote; instead it directed staff to return with cost options and funding pathways.
