Council approves ordinance to protect Stanwood’s brick roads

City staff described the ordinance as protecting both historic brick streets and future brick installations, requiring replacement in similar colors and patterns when repairs are necessary and limiting approaches that would permanently pave over bricks. The ordinance includes an emergency exception to allow necessary utility or sewer repairs with the requirement to restore the brick surface afterward.
A council member moved to adopt the second reading of Ordinance 15 61 and the council passed the motion by voice vote with no amendments. Councilmembers thanked members of the public who raised concerns during the first reading and noted that the ordinance reflected that input.
The ordinance codifies preservation standards for brick streets and gives staff a regulatory basis to require in-kind repair where projects or utilities make cuts to brick pavements.
