Board uses numbered ballots to pick five administrator finalists and two alternates

The Ottawa County Board adopted a ballot-based method to narrow the pool of county administrator applicants and publicly tallied commissioners' numbered selections. Justin (clerk/support staff) explained the rules and displayed a live tally as commissioners submitted ballots. "We will conduct a tally, and the goal is to get to six votes; that's a majority," he said while reading ballots aloud.
After the first-round tallies, five candidates reached the board's threshold and were named finalists: candidate numbers 13, 20, 29, 44 and 50. The board also selected two alternates—candidate 54 as the first alternate and candidate 41 as the second alternate—to replace any finalist who withdraws. Commissioners discussed whether a previously interviewed applicant (Michael Tremblay, previously interviewed) should be treated differently; the chair clarified the vote at this stage was to pick interview candidates only and that the final hiring decision would come after interviews. Staff said interviews and citizen work-group sessions are likely to be scheduled in the week of Sept. 8.
