Council adopts truck-route ordinance to keep heavy vehicles off brick streets

The Stanwood City Council voted unanimously on Feb. 26 to adopt Ordinance 15 60 (SMC Title 10), establishing defined haul routes and local weight limits intended to reduce damage to the city’s brick streets.
City staff said the ordinance creates two haul-route categories—pass-through routes for traffic headed to Camano Island or I-5 and local haul routes for accessing goods and services—and proposes lower weight limits on local and brick roads. Staff also reported two substantive edits since first reading: an exclusion for farm vehicles with a 40-foot maximum and the addition of several collector streets to the haul-route map. According to staff, common local services such as deliveries, utilities and emergency vehicles are exempted from the limits.
Burkeman moved to approve the ordinance on second reading and Rob seconded the motion. After council discussion and no further amendments, the motion passed by voice vote.
The ordinance is intended to preserve historic and residential streets by steering heavy trucks to designated collectors and arterials. Staff said the changes were developed following conversations with residents and local businesses; the council approved the measure as presented and adopted it that evening.
