Planning commission unanimously denied Fantasy Island special‑use request; neighbors cited parking, noise and safety

Heather Reuter told the commission that at its June 2, 2026 meeting the planning commission unanimously denied the applicant's request for special use approval.
"The planning commission at its 06/02/2026 regular meeting voted unanimously to deny this request," Reuter said, and she summarized public opposition at that meeting as raising concerns about compatibility with surrounding uses, traffic, parking, noise, crime and potential impacts on the adjacent neighborhood.
Reuter also noted that the manager of Fantasy Island told the planning commission the two vacant lease parcels proposed for overflow parking were currently being used for that purpose, but staff stressed the parcels are unimproved and would require site plan review before they could lawfully be counted as off‑site parking. The planning commission's unanimous denial is now before the city commission as a de novo appeal; any final administrative order may be appealed to the Circuit Court for the 10th Judicial Circuit in Polk County, Florida.
