Third-graders’ civics assignment prompts dozens of emails and student requests

Superintendent Mark Bracco told the committee that third-grade students completed a civics assignment asking them to email school leaders with ideas to improve elementary school life. He said he reviewed and replied individually to about 18–20 student emails and shared common themes from their suggestions.
"Apparently, I have to go learn what the Gaga pit is," Bracco said, summarizing one recurring request; students also asked for longer recess (one longer block instead of two short periods), class pets, blueberries in the school garden, more buddy-time, composting and more field trips. Committee members praised the teachers for incorporating civic engagement into classwork and noted that student suggestions will be considered by staff and relevant subcommittees.
