The mayor and council recognized the Sparta High School boys lacrosse team for completing an "extraordinary 2026 season" and for capturing the NJSIAA Group 2 state championship on June 13, 2026, defeating Ocean City High School 9–5 at The College of New Jersey. Coach Sean Peterson, who identified himself at the podium, thanked the council and police for escorting the team from the championship and praised the players as role models.
The proclamation also noted the team’s sectional title and tournament victory in Hunterdon‑Warren‑Sussex play; the council congratulated players, coaches, boosters and families and announced a town illumination of columns in white and blue in recognition.
