Sparta Township Council voted to authorize competitive contracting to hire a wireless-telecom consultant to inventory and manage lease agreements for the township’s existing water-tank inventory (14 tanks) and one monopole, and to explore additional lease opportunities. Town Manager Jim Zepp said the consultant will help "maximize the lease returns" across staggered agreements and simplify tracking of multiple carriers and lease terms.
Council members asked whether the consultant’s work would result in new tower construction or impose new equipment near residential areas; the administration and council repeatedly clarified the scope is to manage existing infrastructure and that any new leases or new tower construction would return to council for approval. Deputy Mayor Sylvester voiced concern about health and safety near residences; the manager said any new proposals would come before council and that consultant fees would be paid from the revenue the leases generate. Council approved the resolution by voice vote.
