Board approves CES security gate quote; funding tied to COPS grant decision

The Stevenson-Carson School District Board of Directors voted Aug. 8 to approve a quote to install a security gate at Columbia Elementary School (CES). The motion to approve the quote was made by Lisa Birney and seconded by Mitch Engel; the motion carried.
Board member Mitch Engel asked how the gate would affect sports access. Guest Anthony Winstead clarified the planned gate "would be on a timer and will only be down during school hours and will then open again after school is out," ensuring after-school access for athletics and events. Superintendent Ingrid Colvard told the board the district is pursuing a COPS grant to cover the project; the district will not know whether it received the grant until September, and if the grant is not awarded the district intends to pay from the Capital Projects fund.
