BCHD reports strong early Rx Kids enrollment, expanded lead outreach and thousands of school screenings

Berrien County Health Department staff reported early success for the Rx Kids program and active community outreach efforts. "The first two months of Rx Kids in Benton Harbor, Buchanan, Niles, and Benton Charter Township has been strong," Health Officer Candi Gabrielse said; staff reported 113 families enrolled, 35 babies born into the program and $150,500 distributed to families so far.
Gabrielse also described lead-outreach work in Benton Harbor that included nearly 900 door hangers distributed in February and about 300 emails to residents, plus outreach events and promotion of free home lead assessment and faucet replacement services. The department reported completing more than 6,200 hearing screenings and over 11,000 vision screenings and nearly 300 vaccinations so far this year. WIC benefits changed March 1 under new federal dietary guidelines and staff are conducting an education campaign to inform families.
