Planner: County review of Sumas comprehensive plan due June 9; student presentation set for June 10

City Planner Carson Cortez updated the Sumas Planning Commission on April 20 that the City’s Comprehensive Plan was finalized in December 2025 and that Whatcom County’s review is scheduled to finish by June 9, 2026. Cortez said the City will need to adopt any amendments necessary to align Sumas’s plan with county changes after that review is complete.
Cortez also reported that the group of Western students working with the City will return to present a final deliverable. The Commission agreed to hold that presentation on June 10, 2026, at 5:30 p.m. The Commission did not take formal action on plan amendments at the meeting; staff indicated next steps will depend on Whatcom County’s decision and any required technical updates to the City’s documents.
