Board approves consent calendar including $500,000 supplemental for indigent defense

The Humboldt County Board of Supervisors approved its consent calendar unanimously at the July 28 special meeting. The items included a transfer of contingency funds and a resolution related to CalPERS health for employees, and a $500,000 supplemental appropriation to cover indigent defense expenses.
When a supervisor asked for details about the $500,000, the county CAO explained: "It's a typical year in closing out supplemental funding item for indigent defense. It's a mandate that we provide criminal defense to folks in the judicial system. And when our public defender conflicts out, then it goes to a panel of attorneys, and those costs typically, are on the rise." The CAO said the supplemental covers the remaining balance of fiscal year 25-26.
Supervisor Bushnell made the motion to accept the consent calendar and Supervisor Madrone seconded; no one objected and the clerk announced the motion passed 5-0.
