Councilors press Newton administration for a coordinated family-support plan after ICE detentions

Councilor Sean Roach told the committee the city needs a concrete, repeatable plan so families left behind after detentions have reliable access to basic needs and services.
Roach recommended a framework covering six elements — food, shelter, legal assistance, continued education for children, medical and dental care, and financial assistance — and said the city should coordinate with groups such as LUSI, faith organizations, volunteer networks and immigration lawyers to assemble those services. "We need to have a plan of action that says when somebody is picked up, we are going to make sure that across those six dimensions... these families are provided for," Roach said.
COO Morse and other administration speakers said the city can connect people to resources, that the website is a step forward, and that some residents may not want direct government help; Morse and councilors agreed to convene partners and return with a proposed framework.
